Oh, how I love this Kate! So well told. Resonated loudly with the first time I allowed my singing voice to be heard in person and on recording. This happened not long after I shared my poetry with others too. A pre-menopausal release, an unstoppable declaration of self! Such sweet relief.

Looking forward to hearing your work in due course xx

I teared up reading this! The thought of being 33 and being too late is something I’ve been struggling with as well - I am 33 right now and working on my first release 👽

I am amazed with the kind of singing teacher you had - this kind of patience and space is just what’s needed to overcome looming fears like that. For the longest time I felt the same way about music production - just panic, tightness in chest, the whole package. And it’s only now that I’m healing with the patient help of my friend. It’s quite beautiful when you make the leap, just like you did!

It’s amazing that you’re releasing your first material, too, I hope to get to hear it 🖤

Oh, my heart popped to read this! I'm so glad you related. And now that I'm fast-forwarded 10 years, I'm like -- 33! That's a beeeeeeautiful time to start! Haha. But I get it, in the music industry, women especially are rewarded for being very young ... but I think to decide to do it anyway speaks volumes about you and your art. I also think the stories of older women are very much needed in music - I've lived WAY more life than a 20 year old, I have actual wisdom - and I think there is an audience hungry for that.

Finding those people who support your journey is so key - mine is full of them, and my writing experiment here is kind of like a bunch of love letters to them. None of us can do this entirely alone, we need each other.

Yes you’re so right! There’s definitely so much more to write about at 30 👽 I still get to write silly songs but I can also do something more substantial now!

I’m super happy to have stumbled upon your page 🖤 and I also started my journey here on Substack before even releasing anything at all and it’s been absolutely wonderful, now I feel like I’m not alone in the void anymore!

Definitely not - I feel a sturdy little community of musicians experimenting with a new way of doing music here and I’m loving it. Hit me up anytime!

Ye, I definitely will! As soon as there’s more breathing room with my first release, I’ll be dying to write some essay together 🦋

Good stuff, Kate. If you don’t know about this, you need to check out “singing straws,” stainless steel straws you blow while doing vocal exercises - I’ve increased my range, strengthened by belt, gotten better vibrato control and saved my voice during consecutive gig dates. 15 minutes once a week and I can nail Neil Young, McCartney, Burton Cummings, Roger Daltry and other icon tenors - at 69. The musician’s journey is a hoot. Have fun with yours!

Yes! Elsa ends up teaching me about straws and balloons and many other things that reconnected me with my inner kiddo 🫧 But you’re reminding me that I haven’t picked mine up in a while. Might be time!
